Les Murray (1938 – 2019)

After so many years having his poems recited at the Winter Solstice, we were delighted to host iconic Australian poet Les Murray in 2018. He has published over 30 books and his poetry has been translated into more than 20 languages. He won several literary and other awards including the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 1998, Office of the Order of Australia in 1989, and an Honorary Doctorate at the Australian Catholic University.Les Murray was named an Australian Living Treasure by the National Trust. He was also awarded the Australian Literature Society’s Gold Medal and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. At the 2018 Winter Solstice, we were fortunate enough to have Les recite his poems Dead Trees in the Dam and Driving to the Adelaide Festival 1976 via The Murray Valley Highway.
