David Astle is known for his intellectual mastery of words. He is the creator of crosswords for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, and evenings host at ABC Melbourne. In 2017 he published the book Gargantuan Book Of Words, and in 2015 he published Wordburger.

David Astle has been the Master of Ceremonies at the Winter Solstice and since 2013. He is part of the fabric that stitches the Winter Solstice together, seamlessly transitioning between speakers and performances with grace and reverence.
